It was almost criminal how cheerful Sam was today, greeting all the kitchen staff individually, asking how they were doing, whistling as he moved around the restaurant.

They thought it was a little weird, but they weren't complaining.

Sam was more awake today, as it happened -- without anything new to watch into the disgustingly early hours of the morning, he'd crashed out and crashed hard as soon as the closing ceremonies were over.

He did look awfully mopey, though.

It never got less sad-making. Even if he'd actually seen these particular Olympics before.

If you peered into one of the windows, or poked your head through the front door of the restaurant today, and you happened to be accustomed to seeing Sam there on Mondays, you might notice his absence today.

The truth was, he was there -- just a little too engrossed in certain sports webcasts on his laptop in the back.
